Wedding Files #3 - Guest List + Budget = Venue

The two things that will define your wedding planning are your budget and your guest list, which will lead to your biggest decision of all - the venue. Naturally, though not always the case, the longer your guest list, the bigger the budget you will need. You absolutely cannot seriously seek out a venue without knowing how many people you need it to accommodate. Nor can you evaluate an estimate without knowing how much money you have to work with.

Guest List
Start writing down  the names of everyone you want at your wedding. Get lists from both sets of parents too. Then break it down into 4 columns:
Must Attend || Nice to Have || Only if We Must || Probably Can't Make It

The 'Must-Attends' are obvious. The 'Nice to Haves' might be friends that you aren't crazy close with but would really enjoy to have at your wedding. The 'Only if We Musts' are usually family friends that you really don't have room for but your parents are mortified of offending. It really depends on who's funding this wedding so happy battling there! And unfortunately, there will always be some 'Probably Can't Make Its' from out of town but it's always great & courteous to extend an invite anyway. You might get a pleasant surprise :)

Once you comb through all columns and figure out the number of people you will definitely be inviting, reduce it by 20-30%. There will always be invite declines for various reasons, unless everyone you invite is immediate family. Keep both numbers - total & reduced - in mind when you're budgeting and scoping out venues.

Budget
You do not, I repeat, you DO NOT want to be wedding poor once this is all said and done. Near the beginning of our engagement, an already-engaged acquaintance asked us what we thought was a reasonable amount to take out as a loan to pay for a wedding. The correct answer is ZERO DOLLARS! No loans. No re-mortgaging. No spending all of your savings. It's a one-day party, people! Which is why I was totally OK with no wedding at all, but was over-ruled by my mother and then-fiance.

That being said, you want it to be amazing and unique. All of those things can be done within whatever budget you have. And parents will always help here and there, even if they can't pay for all of it. Be realistic with how much you have saved up, and can save between now and the wedding day. From all the budget 'tips' I read, we ended up loosely using the following breakdown:
  • 45-50% Reception
  • 10-12% Photography/Videography
  • 10-12% Entertainment/Music
  • 8-10% Attire (His & Hers)
  • 8-10% Flowers & Decor
  • 5-10% Misc [invites, gifts, transportation]
Anything remaining can go towards an emergency/surprises slush fund. Depending on how important certain things are to you, you can play with the numbers to balance them to your liking. So you may not be able to get that $10K dress from Kleinfeld's but I bet you can get a similar one elsewhere for a fraction of the cost!

Once you've got these factors down, you can start searching for a venue! There will be other venue-specific factors that will play into your choice but those will be unique to your needs, preferences and options. It's not a bad idea to look at reviews and pictures but looking at the real deal is your best bet.

One last tip - don't set your heart on a single date (unless there's a very special reason for it) and look at date ranges within a month or time period to maximize your choices.

Now go on, start your guest list & budget. You'll only change them like, 43 times between now and the wedding... ;)

Wedding Bells

On Saturday, we attended the wedding of our close friends. This is the first wedding we've been to of mutual friends. Previously, it's been my friend or dC's friend but this one was of mutual friends. I know that sounds unimportant but it actually makes it that much better. Our entire group of friends (and others) celebrating two great people that we all know.

What's also awesome is that their story is so similar to ours! We met around the same [just over 3 years ago] through our corporate softball team and we started dating just before them. They did get engaged much sooner, about 9 months before us, and [clearly] got married a year before us.

It's totally cool and insane for us have grown together like that & it was amazing to take part in their special day.

But let's face it - pictures are the best so here we go! Fair warning, there's only one picture here where I am/have not consumed alcohol.

Taking a {drinking} break while we wait for the reception!

Dance, dance!

With the groom...

...and with the bride!

The night may have been a blur, but it was surely one of the best blurs ever!

Wedding Planner

We've actually nailed down an important piece since my last wedding post so now it's time to do some real planning.

I won't be hiring a wedding planner because that's not something we have the budget for (although having someone that last week and day of would be great!) and let's face it - I would micro-manage the shit out of that poor individual.

Except...now I'm stumped. I can't figure out which online tool I should use. The best source for this answer = you ladies :)

I have this Knot binder from my amazing MOH, which I will be using, but I also need an online source & website designer.

These are the three I'm looking at:

I'm asking a lovely wedding planner friend as well, but what did you use? Pros/Cons? Helpful, not so much? Did I miss any good ones?

I'm linking up these gals because it's been so great getting feedback from other brides-to-be!

Wedding Date

Suuuuuuch a good movie in a total cheesie, rom com way. And Dermot Mulroney? Hell yes. Please. Now. Way better than My Best Friend's Wedding. He seems to enjoy weddings. You haven't seen it? Oh, you should.
{via}
is this movie seriously 9 years old? wow.
But that's not why we're here today. We're going to talk about my wedding date. I'm pretty sure I haven't posted about our impending wedding since the engagement. Because there hasn't been a lot to talk about.

Right from the time we got engaged, we had tentatively set Fall 2015 as our wedding period. A full two years after our engagement. Apparently, that is the craziest shit anyone has ever heard and if I have to hear...
Why are you waiting so long?!
...one more fucking time, I swear I'm going to impale the person. (Sorry if that's you.)

It's because we had other priorities. Being financially stable is important to us as we planned on financing the wedding ourselves. But first and foremost, we wanted to buy a place. Which we have! So now we're considering bumping it up to...Spring 2015.

Did you think I was going to say 2014? Oh no, no. I do not want to devote my life to planning this wedding. I want to take my time and actually enjoy it. We don't need a wedding to be together & happy.

So now that we've bought a place, how much have we planned? You'll have to wait until the next wedding post!

I'm linking up these gals because I'm so curious to get other brides-to-be's opinions & thoughts on this!

Lushin', Lovin', Lakin'

This past weekend was quite eventful!

Friday started off with Toronto's Annual Beerfest. We've attended the last couple of years with our group of friends but this year wasn't nearly as much as prior. Not sure why but I still can't complain about many-a-refills of this...

Saturday we headed out of town for the  wedding of one my university friends She looked stunning & I can't believe these are the only two pictures that I got! This is just my ceremony dress (that we were late for thanks to traffic) :(

On our way back on Sunday we stopped off in Oakville since we realized neither of us had been there. It's right by the lake & I'd heard great things about it's little downtown. It was definitely a cute little place - totally felt like Niagara-on-the-Lake.

I love busy weekends filled with lots of fun instead of los of responsibilities...Ah, adulthood...

Buh-bye Summer!

I know summer ended two days ago, but on this blog I've got one more summer post to share so it's going to be ending today. I just extended your summer - you're welcome.

Excuse the cliche but - where did the summer go? I know we say that every year but I must say that this year seems to have passed exceptionally quickly. Probably because there was so much going on with very little down time to just BE. Or I just don't remember that down time. Either way, summer 2012 went by in a flash!

In Toronto, you know summer is coming to an end when Th Ex hits town. And you know it's hit town when you can hear what sounds like World War III bomb planes outside. The air show is annoying.

Ribfest, $30 for a stuffed animal (thank you arcade!) & a Friday night to take in the last of summer gloriousness. Amazing.

We officially ended summer in style at this couple's very lovely wedding...

...with us looking as stunning as always...just saying ;)

As always though, I am looking forward to autumn - my favourite season by far! - for the winding down, bundling up and time to cozy up at home guilt-free! :)

Most importantly - only 2 months until my birthday! Don't worry, I'll share the wishlist soon to give you plenty of time to shop and mail your gifts!

*Spruced up my apartment! Thank you centrepieces!

*Celebrated the warm weather with some delicious gelato! Way better than ice cream, btw

Happy #HumpDay!
