Book Club - My Fair Lazy

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This was originally a 2.5 bumped up to a 3-star but it's really more of a 2-star. In hindsight (since I'm writing this about a month later), I can't remember liking anything about this book. Reading about writing, meeting deadlines, going on book tours and random not-very-interesting shenanigans got redundant. The only redeeming parts would be parts that made me laugh. I can't remember what exactly they were but I remember they existed. A few at least.

Anyway, this book was the last in this memoir series (I'm fairly certain) and it's the end of me reading Jen Lancaster books for a long while.

Friendship, redefined

Several weeks ago, we went to a friend's birthday. I was really looking forward to it - Friday night, summer, drinks - why not?! Except I was ready to go home within 10 minutes. After exchanging the standard pleasantries of 'Hey, how are you? What's new?' I quickly discovered that absolutely nothing was new.

Clearly there's a reason I call this group of friends "Mike's friends". I met them around the same time I met Mike - in fact we both did - through our old work softball league. If I hadn't stayed with Mike, I wouldn't have stayed friends with these folks. Simply because we have nothing in common except for what bonded us at first - our jobs.

Mike still gets together with them but I generally skip out on anything that isn't a birthday or some kind of 'special occasion'. I think I talk enough about being time-starved - I really have zero time to waste on friendships that are not fulfilling.

They're nice people, don't get me wrong. But I shouldn't be struggling to make conversation 10 minutes in, right? And then sometimes there are IRL friends are ultra annoying and you just want to kick them. See this post & this one.

I do have truly good friends - ones that are like family & I will know forever - but we're not all in one tight group so it's hard to see everyone often. But when we do spend time together, it's fabulous! The kinds of friends that you can be apart from for weeks, months or longer and yet you don't miss a beat when you reunite. Those friendships are magical.

And then there are blog friends. Bloggers will understand, the rest likely will not but I think that it makes perfect sense. These are the people who the only reason you even know of their existence, even if it's halfway across the country or world, is that because when you came across their blog, at least one of their blog posts truly spoke to you.

Then make that every post. Which is followed by regular tweeting, then texting and then, if you're very lucky enough to live in even the same time zone as that person, you get to meet face to face. Yes, it is exactly like dating. And yes, first meetings are very much like first dates. LOL

I have been lucky enough to meet two of my favourite ladies!

Bree I've known the longest - just over 2 years now - because we live in the same city. We probably don't see each other as much as we'd I'd like to - you know, life gets in the way - but when we do, there's always more than enough to talk about & catch up on. She's usually the one I consult with when events are going on around town, the first person I advise of upcoming store closures with potential for massive sales & the usual it's-too-cold-no-it's-too-hot banter.

Jennie I just got to meet last month & she's even more wonderful than she let on! We unsuccessfully met up for coffee because I got lost in the rain torrential downpour, which naturally resulted in splitting a half-price bottle of wine & we had ourselves a ball! Believe me, this would probably be a regular thing if she lived closer... *hint hint* Plus, there's not a single nail challenge that Jennie hasn't accepted and outdone herself in - I'm running out of ways to stump her, seriously :P

I'm super glad that I've been able to turn these bloggy friends into IRL friends b/c they totally fit what I expect from real friends - a connection. No pressure ladies! LOL

Rarely am I as happy about my blog as when I think about all of the amazing people it has given me the opportunity to collide with, IRL or not. Friendships & bonds that would not have been possible if it wasn't for this little cyber spot of mine. Yeah, I'm cheesin'.

Thanks to everyone I've met thus far and looking forward to those peeps I don't even know yet!

Book Review - Wedding Night

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I did not love this as much as I have loved all other Kinsella novels. I didn't fall in love with any of the characters and I feel like there was a lot of fluff in the story. It was so predictable in a cheesy sort of way.
The best part of the book was the featuring of Sofia, Bulgaria; I was born there so I'm biased. ;)

Overall this was just meh for me & I wouldn't recommend even for a Kinsella fan. Actually, especially for Kinsella fans.

Paris a la Pinterest

In three weeks I'll be packing for Paris and I cannot describe how much I can't wait! The other day I decided to check my travel board on Pinterest to see if I'd posted anything good about Paris.

This is what I found...

Yes, a lot of Eiffel Tower; definitely what I am most excited about. But I'll probably have to add some things to this Paris collection if I want to see more than one thing! Haha!

Has anyone been to Paris? I would love your tips & recommendations!

The X-Files

Yes, this post is totally about the 90s TV show. Gawd, did you think it was going to be something sexual? Mind out of the gutter! That's so not me.

I watched this as a kid though not regularly by any means and it usually depended on whether my mom wanted to watch. Or how scared I was getting. Usually I wanted to keep on watching but my mom knew it would lead to crawling into their bed at 2AM.

A few weeks ago I realized it was on Netflix and knew I needed to complete this unknown-until-then bucket list item.

Night 1 - Pre
Mike: "What are you going to do while I'm at softball tn?"
Me: "Probably start X-Files and see if I actually like it."

Night 1 - Post
Mike: "Did you watch any X-Files? How was it?"
Me: "OMG it was amazing I watched 4 episodes!!"
Mike:"Ugh, seriously? OK..." *walks away*

It's pretty well-established that I'm weird so I'm sure he didn't think much of the latest crazy girl conversation.

Night 2 - Pre
Mike: "Hey, do you want to meet up with X for drinks or something tonight?"
Me: "Oh, it's been a long week so I was just kind of planning on staying in."
Mike: "Are you sure? Could be fun. There's not much to do at home, anyway."
Me: "I'll just catch up on some TV or something..."
Mike: "OMG you're going to watch more X-Files aren't you?"
Me: "What? No. I mean, I might depending on how the night plays out but that's not like, my reason."

Ugh, it totally was. That, plus my next post.

Night 2 - Post
Mike: "So how many episodes of X-Files did you watch tonight?"
Me: "Like... 5. So good!"
Mike: *shakes head*

Seriously. So far I've completed the first season and am so pumped that there are eight more seasons left for me to watch!

Anyone else watching X-Files on Netflix? What are some other 90's shows you'd love to [re-]watch?

Book Club - Pretty in Plaid

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this Jen Lancaster memoir more than the last few which was a pleasant surprise. I think the reason for that is that it was a trip down memory lane from when she was a young child, up until her first book, Bitter is the New Black: Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass, Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office (which I thought was great!). My favourite was her earlier childhood - I love preppy, sophisticated kids so that's probably why.

So if you'd lost hope in Jen Lancaster, like me, I still think this could be a redeemer for you!

RIP Robin Williams

This is the order of emotions I felt last night after hearing the news of Robin Williams...

- Disbelief...because this must be another internet rumour.
- Shock
- Sadness
- Denial
- Tears...and that's still happening any time I read something about him.

I thought about why the tears and realized it's the fact that his movies are in the top favourites of my childhood & early adolescence. He was brilliant.

Aladdin - my first Disney movie

Mrs. Doubtfire - One of the first movies I fell in love with in that "watch it any time it's on" way

Hook - I have always loved Peter Pan

Jumanji - My dad took me to see this in theatres & I loved it once

Dead Poet's Society - One of the only "educational" movies I didn't hate watching in school

Patch Adams - The first movie I thought of when I heard the news...

Good Will Hunting - I am convinced he made this movie what it was for Matt Damon & Ben Affleck
And so my love affair crush with Matt Damon began...

I realize there are more. Many more. Older, newer, better, worse. He was incredible and there will never be another like him. I feel lucky to have been able to watch his movies through the years, and will continue to watch them for many years to come...

Review: July ipsy Glambag

I was pretty happy with my July haul and the goodies were packed into yet another cute pouch. I'm using it to store a few travel-sized products in my gym bag.

derma e BB Creme with SPF 25
I'm glad I received this when I did because the current BB I have doesn't have any SPF and I like to protect my face as much as possible in the summer. This formula goes on a bit greasy but sets in a few minutes. If I'm short on time, I brush on a bit of translucent powder to help it set faster. I really like how long the formula lasts & if it wasn't so expensive ($30 for 60mL) I would buy it once my sample finished.

Pixi Beauty Mini Tinted Brilliance Balm in Unique Pink
This thing is so cute! In my experience, 'tinted' lip balm is either full on lip gloss or completely clear. This is a true tint - it goes on smooth & moist, with a hint of colour. I'm happy I got the shade that I did b/c the other option was quite dark. I think this will last me a while but I wouldn't definitely buy this!

POP Beauty Sunkissed Bronzer
Another product with perfect timing. My current bronzer is matte, for all-over dusting. This bronzer has a hint of sparkle and is the perfect not-too-dark shade for my skintone. I've been using it as blush/highlighter for a more natural everyday look and I love it. In terms of formula, I don't know that it's much different than any other bronzer and apparently this brand only ships to the US & EU so it wouldn't be easy to get anyway.

Pur~lisse pur~protect essential daily moisturizer spf 30
Is the 'perfect timing' thing getting redundant? I'm currently using a Cetaphil daily moisturizer (hate it, but that's a different story) and it only has an SPF of 15. Like I said, I need extra SPF in the summer but it's more or less a standard moisturizer. Great size for keeping in my makeup case.

bareMinerals READY® Eyeshadow 2.0 in The Illuminated
Honestly, I didn't try this product. I meant to but I almost never wear eyeshadow (though you'd never know it by my collection) and the occasion to test it out just didn't come around. The colours are a white-ish and a deep plum. I don't doubt that they are pretty good considering what I know of the bareMinerals brand but I don't have a review of this at the moment. Fail, sorry.

Have you tried any of these products and/or brands? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
