Summer Blockbuster Review #6 - Red 2 & Kick Ass 2

Checkout  Reviews #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5 too!

Although not our original list, after seeing a few previews for these movies we decided we may as well see them since we both enjoyed the first ones. Isn't that how it always is, thought?

Red 2

It was really entertaining and although not that different from the first one (the character relationships have been established here obv), it had its fair share of hilarious moments and lines. I also enjoyed some of the unpredictable moments since this stuff can get pretty predictable. Plus, when is it not fun to see John Malkovich & Bruce Willis together?!
I recommend this as a fun watch, especially if you're a fan of the actors.

Kick Ass 2

I watched the first Kick Ass just a couple of weeks ago and thought it was absolutely great!! To be honest, I'm not sure I even knew that movie existed or at least didn't remember hearing anything about it. Apparently it's on of dC's favourites - took me 2+ year to find that out LOL
Anyway, the sequel - awesome! Or as awesome as a sequal can be. They did an amazing job of continuing the storyline where the last one had left off and staying true to its purpose. This movie, like the first one, definitely is not for everyone. The violence, blood & gore could be too much for some, so that's my disclaimer.
Definitely recommend this if you can stomach it!!!

before the end...

With September [quickly] approaching, it definitely feels like the end of summer. I blame those two decades of going back to school that have engrained that into our psyche.

There's still so much to do before summer ends though! Here's my list:

- Go to the CNE this weekend (an annual fair in Toronto)
- See Walk Off The Earth! (playing @ the CNE)
- Hang out with my cousin who is also visiting this weekend!!!
- See a TIFF movie (we get to pick our movie tomorrow!)
- Finish planning our California trip & GO! *excited!*

Somewhere in there I need to go to the beach, check out a few more patios & wear some more of my summer outfits!

What are your end-of-Summer plans?!

Cat Nap

I can't believe how little I post about Koko, compared to how much I thought I would when I first got him. It's definitely not because there's nothing to say, trust me, but it's hard to capture it tangibly! He's so fast & crazy when he's running around - he's still a kitten! - that it's hard to get him on camera. By the time I try to, it's over. Plus, I enjoy just playing & cuddling without worrying about taking a nice shot. I'll try harder though!

That being said, I do get some great shots when he's all tuckered out and/or napping. Like this one - where he progressively stretched out more and more across my bed & finally fell asleep.

Gosh I just love this little fluffy guy so much!

The Debut

Last Saturday, we attended dC's little cousin's debut. In Filipino tradition, the debut is a formal affair for a girl's 18th birthday. Dresses, entourage, roses, the works.

Birthday girl had a theme - Tiffany blue - and since y'all know that's my fave, I happened to have accidentally worn the theme colour despite not being part of the entourage. Ooops.

It was great night with lots food, music & fun - and Tiffany blue :)

Dance #4 (of 18)!

The night ended with DJ dC spinning some tunes...and he was actually pretty great at it! Career change...?

#Music Monday - Gaga vs Katy

My girl Lady Gaga & Katy Perry have both recently released new songs from upcoming albums and are vying for the 'late summer anthem' title.

In case you haven't heard them, here they are:

Official video is here!

What do you think? Which do you prefer?

Check out the Gaga/Perez feud that this has fueled.

Book Club! - 8.16

It's time for Book Club with Heather & Katie!

This week I'm reviewing:

Personal vendettas, hidden treasure, and a monkey named Carl will send bounty hunter Stephanie Plum on her most explosive adventure yet.
Full description here

Evanovich's #14 was awesome! The whole description was just too long & ruins the mystery in my opinion. If you're not reading the Plum books because you think it's too long and will get stale - you're so wrong. I can't believe how good this book was considering how deep into the series I am. It took me two days to read. 'Nuff said!

Missing EBS

This time of the year will likely forever cause a mix of emotions - mainly bittersweet nostalgia.

I don't think I've talked about my exchange too much on the blog but it is one of my favourite parts of my life. Sweet for obvious reasons; bitter because it could have been even sweeter had I taken more risks & leaps of faith...

Some of my favourite people are those that I met on exchange and still talk to today. I can't even describe how much I would give to have those people be in my real life every single day.

Anyway, today marks 5 years since I landed in Germany and began my adventures at EBS [European Business School].

5 years ago today, I took these pictures during my first explorations...
I arrived quite early in the morning

We lived amongst vineyards & wineries
And right along the Rhein
The view from my bedroom

And of course, the greatest flatmates a girl could ask for...
Missing the times and the people nearly every day since....

California Dreamin'

I'm so excited that we've finally started planning our [main] 2013 vacation...

...a California road trip!

No exact details yet but we're thinking of driving between San Francisco & San Diego and trying to see as much as possible in between!
So far we've only booked our flight there but I'm sure the rest will fall into place, right? RIGHT?!

Any & all Cali vacation tips are welcome & needed!
Thank you to Claire who's already filling me in on the transit situation in San Fran!

Also, if you're interested in guest posting while I'm away, please let me know!

As all you instagramers have already seen, I chopped off my hair this past weekend!!

Post-hair salon
It's been a while coming and originally I was going to wait until the end of the summer or early Fall to do but I got antsy & started browsing Pinterest. Props to Christina for guessing which Pin I had my eye on for this cut ;)

Post-quick straightening
I totally love it - it's been over four years or more since I've had hair this short and we're 'getting reacquainted' Haha

And totally out of comfort zone, I also got a facial this weekend. Told ya I pampered myself!

I got a spa gift card for my birthday 3 years ago, which I never used b/c I'm not really a spa-goer. Finally I decided that something needed to be done about all the blemishes I was getting recently and my pores so I made an appointment. If the spa wasn't close to home, I probably would have procrastinated this even longer.

I'm pretty self concious about my skin sans makeup so I won't be posted before & afters but the verdict is - it was just okay. It definitely cleared up my pores a bit but I feel like if I do some serious skin management (see this post by Tara), I can maintain that on my own without dishing out $75+ for an hour.

Do you get regular facials? What do you think of them in general?

Book Club - 8.08

It's time for Book Club with Heather & Katie!

This week I'm reviewing:
Jen Lancaster hates to burst your happy little bubble, but life in the big city isn't all it's cracked up to be. Contrary to what you see on TV and in the movies, most urbanites aren't party-hopping in slinky dresses and strappy stilettos. But lucky for us, Lancaster knows how to make the life of the lower crust mercilessly funny and infinitely entertaining.

Whether she's reporting rude neighbors to Homeland Security, harboring a crush on her grocery store clerk, or fighting-and losing-the Battle of the Stairmaster- Lancaster explores how silly, strange, and not-so-fabulous real city living can be. And if anyone doesn't like it, they can kiss her big, fat, pink, puffy down parka.

As if I could wait very long before I read another Jen Lancaster book! This woman makes me feel like my neurotic and wacky ways are totally normal. Well maybe not totally normal, but at a socially-acceptable level. This book was possible even better than Bitter since it got right into the life and humour of it without the back story that we already know.

What stands out the most for me are Jen's stories about her temp jobs. I would love to be able to just temp. I'd still do a good job, but not be so invested to the point of having work dreams nightmares! Plus, I'm always looking for a change of scenery! One can dream...
In the meantime, read Bitter then pick this up!

August 8, 2013

life's too short

Too short for me to waste what little non-working, non-sleeping time I have in a day on things I don't care about.
Too short for me to procrastinate things I actually want to do.

Last night I found out a good friend has been in the hospital/rehab for the last month after being in an accident.
It broke my heart, but at the same time I was so relieved he was OK.
Had I not procrastinated getting in touch with said friend I would have known much sooner. Hello, eye-opener!

Things around here need to change, on my terms. I'm quite averse to change and risks so I acknowledge that it will probably be a slow change.
But there will be a change.

Like I said, only one month of summer left & now's the time to make it count.

Happy Thursday, lovelies :)

Quinoa Recipe - Oh, How Pinteresting!

Who doesn't love a good recipe find? That's right, no one.

I came across this one the other day & was already looking for something to make for dinner so figured I'd give it a try. So worth it!

For quick reference, here's a snapshot of the ingredients:
Recipe Screenshot
Here's what I changed:
1. I ended up with more than 2 cups of  quinoa so I added extra sauce and ended up using a whole jar - it's up to your tastes.
2. I replaced heavy cream with sour cream.
3. I couldn't find any fresh basil in the stores I checked so had to skip it.
4. I skipped the crushed red pepper as I'm not a fan & don't have any.

It was delicious & really filling! This is also probably the first recipe where the estimated prep/cook times are actually accurate!

If you really, really need some meat, I think you can easily add cooked cubed chicken breast or sausage. It will also likely last you longer as the meat will make each portion even more filling!

Linking up with Michelle today!

20 Years of Red & White

20 years ago today, my parents & I came to Canada from Europe.

I remember that day so vividly from beginning to end & will likely never forget it...

Watching Groundhog Day on the plane - now an all-time favourite.

Seeing the sun setting on the Montreal skyline on drive from the airport.

Being mesmerized by Homeward Bound - another favourite of mine.

Not realizing how big of a life-changer this move was truly going to be...seeing as I was only six.

Even after 20 years, I never stop wondering what my life would have been like if this had never happened...le sigh.

Summer Blockbuster Review #5 - The Heat + White House Down

Checkout  Reviews #1#2#3 and #4 too!

The Heat

We watched The Heat a couple of weeks ago at the drive-in [awesome summer activity!] and it was a little bit of a let down for me. It was funny, don't get me wrong, but I had set my expectations so high since I love Sandra Bullock and female comedy, that it came in just a little bit short. I definitely recommend it as a feel-good laugh movie though and a sequel has been confirmed!

White House Down

The second feature of the drive-in! I'm probably the only girl in the world that is not only not head over heels for Channing Tatum, but truly unimpressed. Don't hate, be thankful y'all can have him to yourselves! LOL
Anyway, we just had to see this movie because we saw 'Olympus Has Fallen' with [my main man] Gerard Butler back in March. In comparison, 'Olympus Has Fallen' had a far more interesting plot than this movie had and it seemed like a copy-cat. But the Jamie Foxx/Channing Tatum plus the action provided sufficient entertainment for me so it wouldn't be a waste of you go see it.
