A look at the year that was...2011

It's time for the annual "year in review" and I'm glad I've managed to find a bit of time in the Holiday craziness to do this review!

I love writing this because it gives me a chance to go "Oh yeah! I almost forgot that happened!" and reflect on what the hell I was thinking this past year. Also love reading everyone else's & reflecting on all of our accomplishments :)

This year I've decided to pick the highlights by month, since each month was special in its own way!

January
I did a rather popular Golden Globes Recap...be on the look out for one in 2012!
February
I got a New Toy! And the reason I've been able to blog in 2011 Hahaha
March
I want to see Lady Gaga & it was AH-MAY-ZING!
April
My 2-week vaca to the motherland prompted a blog photo challenge starting with all about me!
May
It was my blog's 1st birthday - so exciting and a little bit hard to believe!
June
I had my 1st date with dC & it was wonderful - much like the months since then have been <3
July
Summer was crazy busy but I got an invite to guest post at Leanna's blog!
August
I taught y'all the most important ingredients to making banana bread. You're welcome.
September
October
I had a little bit of a wardrobe malfunction - no big deal.
November
This girl had one very happy 25th birthday<3
December
#TeamdCdK went to NYC this year & loved it!

I'm so pumped about 2012 & all the awesomeness it's going to bring! And if there will be an apocalypse, can I please get some notice first? I'd like to blow my savings :)

Hope everyone had an amazing year & all the best in 2012!

Book Club Friday

It's book-nerd time again!

This week I'm reviewing:

Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark won the annual competition described in Hunger Games, but the aftermath leaves these victors with no sense of triumph. Instead, they have become the poster boys for a rebellion that they never planned to lead. That new, unwanted status puts them in the bull's-eye for merciless revenge by The Capitol...

Book 2 starts off just right. The author skips the perfect amount of time from the last book in order to start building up the action for this adventure. I definitely enjoyed it just as much as I enjoyed the first so y'all should read this one too!

Also check out my Book List!

Santa Baby!

Did I mention I got hella spoiled this year? Parents, friends, boyfriend, "in-laws"...everyone showed the love this year :) And of course this girl reciprocated!

By far the best gift of all was my Pandora bracelet (from my wishlist!) with 3 charms from my spectacular boyfriend! LOVE IT!
[sorry for the dark picture!]
The charms on the far left & far right are from my sister & mom, respectively
Here's are some of the other things I was spoiled with, both functional & fun:
- a pot/pasta cooker/steamer in 1
- a Christmas serving dish
- a Germany calendar
- a kettle
- a Bath & Body works gift box
- a jewelry box
- lots of chocolate!
- a Tommy Hilfiger hoody (pretty much an acceptance gift from the dC family)
- a Coach wristlet!
- a AE sweater
I may be forgetting a couple...but SO MUCH STUFF!

Thank you to my Santas :)

The Holiday Lull

So it's the week between Christmas & New Years, and what to do? Personally, I find this to be the most random part of the holidays.

Leading up to Christmas is the craziness of gift-buying, gift-wrapping, and cramming in meetings with everyone you won't see over those 2 key days. Then Christmas Eve & Day are mostly a blur of food, family, gifts & dessert. Yes, dessert gets its own call out.

New Years is similar. I find many people don't have plans made too far in advance and mad props to those who are able to set something up! So the last couple of days before are a hoopla of confirming plans (that realistically could have been made weeks ago) and figuring out the answer to the all-important question "Whattamigonnawear?!"

After you ring in the New Year, it's pretty much back to work (or school) and you start the year all over again...whomp whomp.

But what does one do in between the craziness? The reason I feel it's the most random part is because it's the least predictable, and there are many factors:

- Do I have to "work"?
- Are others "working"?
- Are we getting a blizzard this year?
- Does anyone feel like getting together for yet another dinner?
- Does anyone even have any money left to go out, etc? (probably not)

All of these are important questions that need answers before you can plan those critical in between days. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal but honestly, it is. We rarely get such a care-free time off, where even those who have to go into work are forgiven when they're not really working but napping away the lingering food commas at their cubicles.

I, for one, plan to make the most out of my "Holiday lull". This year I won't be going into the office - though I do have my work laptop to be available in emergencies - and have 4 entire days to work with. Here's the plan so far:
1. mini Christmas with dC <3
2. dinner at my "in-laws"
3. skating
4. hosting a dinner chez moi!
5. relaxing :)
6. partaking in that infamous hoopla that leads up to New Years - no plans yet for this girl!!

So tell me, how do you make the most out of the Holiday Lull?

Merry Christmas!

How did y'all spend their Christmas Day today?! I'm curious to know what everyone's traditions are!

We had a boardgame marathon including:
- Apples to Apples
- Taboo
- Harry Potter CLUE
- Scattergories
- Monopoly

As you know, I'm overly competitive but I LOVE boardgames. Yes I prefer winning, but mostly it's the playing. ;)

Stay tuned for my gift list, since dC & I are having our own mini Christmas later this week :) <3

Christmas Spirit...tick tock

Does anyone else feel like this month has flown by?! Christmas is in 4 days and I'm lacking in the Christmas spirit.

I've put up my Christmas tree & all of the decorations. I'm done my shopping & wrapped the gifts. I baked Christmas goodies and shared them all at work (I wasn't going to be eating all those myself!)

So as much as I hate to admit it, what's missing is the...snow. Maybe not even now - I do still have to drive home in a few days - but according to the forecast, there is no snow in sight. No snow just doesn't feel like Christmas. The solution for which of course is to keep the blinds and curtains closed :)

Now that we're on the subject, I think y'all should check out the Christmas Spirit Tree! Those of you who love social media will appreciate this - it is literally powered by Christmas spirit via different social media. The website explains it much better. The tree is setup in Toronto's Union (train) Station so I went to go see it!

Let me know what you think of this (great!) idea!

And are you getting into the Christmas spirit yet?!

NYC, Part III

It's been a while since I posted Part 1 & Part 2 of our NYC trip, and mostly on purpose. The moment I posted it, it would be over and I've been avoiding that. But I feel that I'm going to enjoy writing this post and looking back at this wonderful trip. Not to mention really look forward to planning the next NYC trip!

Day 3 was my favourite I think. It was much more relaxed since we had covered most of the things on our to do list and explored some of the loveliest places!

Radio City already decorated for the Holidays!
To everyone who suggested to go up to the Top of the Rock (at Rockefeller Centre) instead of the Empire State Building - thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Love

More Love

Even more Love

And some L.O.V.E. :)

The Serendipity Skating Rink!

F.A.O. Schwartz
[I love toys]

I love Forrest Gump!
[I definitely tried everything with 'Lt. Dan' in the name...]

Alas, goodbye NYC...until next time!! :)

Book Club Friday

After the last book review rant, I'm happy to be linking up with Heather's Book Club on a positive note.

This week I'm reviewing:

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Good reads

I loved this book! YA or not, it was the perfect change from the last book I read. It was fast-paced, entertaining and well-written. Yes, this book actually had grammar. What I liked most was that despite its youth-based fictional story, the dystopian undertones were very mature and easily paralleled to reality. I don't want to give much away so go read it!!

The Wishlist

I'm so so sorry to have kept ya'll waiting for my Wishlist. I hope that holding off on your Christmas shopping in anticipation of this hasn't been too inconvenient for you! Well, without further ado...

Apples to Apples

I know, lotsa nerdy board games :)

And now the good stuff...

or this one...

Quite frankly I don't know which bracelet I want and I can't have both. Different functions though I think, no? Just say yes :)

Now get to shopping, bloggies!! :)

It's Christmas time!

For me, one of the first feelings of the Christmas spirit comes from putting up the tree. This year I went for the blue & silver tree and love it - perfect mix of Christmas and winter!
So far though my tree is the only sign of winter because there has been no snow whatsoever! I'm not the biggest fan of snow but I definitely need some in December to kick my Christmas spirit up a notch!
dK Christmas Tree 2011
[we even hung up some stockings!]

Tree topper! Blurry but lovely :)
Only thing that's missing right now are the gifts. I guess it might be a good idea to let everyone know what my Wishlist is first though! ;)

Have any of you put up your Christmas tree yet??

Christmas goodies!

I dedicated this past weekend to doing my Christmas baking and treat-making. Here are the results!

Almond Biscotti

[No-Bake] Peanut Butter Oatmeal Chocolate Bites

Chocolate-covered Pretzels with festive drizzle

Peppermint Bark

Shortbread Cookies with festive drizzle

Blitzen's Breton Brittle

Sugar Cookies
The only thing not pictured is the sugar cookies that I sandwiched with homemade (not by me) berry jam. I'm really excited about how everything turned out! Tomorrow they'll all be wrapped up for bringing to work on Friday. Can't wait for the critics' opinions lol

*If you would like any of the recipes here, please let me know!*

NYC, Part II

Check out our Day 1 adventures!

After doing the more touristy things in Lower Manhattan on our first day, Day 2 consisted of exploring the Lower to Midtown neighbourhoods. This was definitely the part I was most excited about and the plan consisted of only one thing: walking.

Awesomely enough, my cousin and her bff were in town that weekend as well so we met up with them for part of the day :)
Lovelies <3

Little Italy

We couldn't not go into the Beats by Dre store!

This was super cool - I can't imagine how he did this!

DKinNY - perfect :)

Had lunch at this lovely place in SoHo

Washington Park - my favourite place of the day :)
I absolutely loved that these very Italian guys brought a thermos and espresso cups to drink in the park!
Wish we could have seen a Rangers [hockey] game!

Empire State Building (this is as close as we got)

One day I want to take a train into Grand Central, it was huge!

Ending the night at Times Square's Hard Rock Cafe
Umm, last call in NYC is at 4am?! I didn't think that was possible in North America! Way.too.awesome. Obviously reason #5909709 that I should live here :)

Day #3 - our last :( - is coming up soon...
